As Nigeria prepares for the political events ahead of 2027, it’s vital to understand the thin but critical line between partisanship and patriotism, especially as it shapes our democracy and governance.

What Is Partisanship?

Partisanship is unwavering loyalty to a political party, supporting its agenda regardless of the broader impact on national development. It may be driven by personal benefit, loyalty, or ideology, but it often overlooks the collective interest of the nation.

On the other hand, patriotism is a love for the country that prioritizes national progress above party interests. It’s about civic responsibility, obeying laws, paying taxes, protecting lives and property, and contributing to national development. It places Nigeria first.

Patriotism from citizens reflects in their support for policies that benefit the nation. Likewise, patriotism from leaders manifests as good governance and inclusive leadership. Together, both parties create the foundation for a thriving Nigeria.

Why the Labour Party Is Different

The Labour Party (LP) is widely regarded as a unique political platform because it prioritizes patriotism over partisanship. The LP draws members from all sectors, public and private, forming a united front of Nigerians committed to building a just and equitable society.

The LP stands for:

Social justice and equity

Internal democracy

Welfare of Nigerian workers

Leadership mentoring and capacity building

It is not just a political party; it’s a movement. A platform where every citizen, regardless of background, has a voice and a stake in Nigeria’s future.

LP and President Tinubu: A Win-Win Approach

Interestingly, many LP members support President Tinubu not out of partisanship, but patriotism. His Renewed Hope Agenda aligns with LP’s vision of giving hope to the hopeless. His inclusive governance has created a balanced political atmosphere that fosters unity, stability, and growth.

As the Labour Party heads into its Congress and National Convention in 2025, it continues to stand as a beacon of hope for millions of Nigerians. It promotes transparency, fights corruption, and reduces the high cost of political participation.

Nigeria needs political parties that go beyond partisanship. The Labour Party is that kind of party, built on values, rooted in justice, and focused on people.
