Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has reaffirmed that the local government elections will hold as planned on Saturday, despite opposition from the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.

In a statement on Friday, Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, emphasized that the governor remains committed to upholding the rule of law, adding that no authority has the power to override a court decision.

“For me and my people, the rule of law prevails over unlawful interference. The election will proceed, paving the way for grassroots development. I urge our people to remain peaceful, Osun is a peaceful state,” the statement read.

Election Preparations in Full Swing

Adeleke assured that the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) had made all necessary arrangements for the polls, with multiple political parties participating.

“Our people are ready to elect their chairmen and councillors. Reports indicate that OSIEC has done a commendable job preparing for the exercise. A fair and transparent process is guaranteed,” he added.

AGF Cites Legal Grounds for Suspension

On Thursday, the AGF urged Adeleke to direct OSIEC to halt the election, arguing that it would be unconstitutional. He referenced a recent Court of Appeal ruling in Akure, which reinstated local government chairmen elected under former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.

According to Fagbemi, their tenure remains valid until October 2025, making any fresh election unlawful. He warned that proceeding with the polls would amount to a “blatant violation of the Constitution,” which Adeleke has sworn to uphold.

Legal Showdown Looms

Despite the AGF’s concerns, Adeleke remains unwavering in his decision to proceed with the election. With both sides standing their ground, the situation sets the stage for a potential constitutional confrontation.
