The appearance of betting services on OPay’s fintech platform has sparked reactions among Nigerian users, with some questioning the decision to make gambling-related services accessible through an app used for everyday financial transactions.
The discussion gained attention on X, formerly Twitter, after users noticed that betting platforms featuring games such as Aviator were available through OPay.
Users Raise Concerns Over Betting Services
Some users argued that integrating betting services into a financial platform could make gambling easier to access, particularly for young Nigerians.
One X user, SoftBrain, said the presence of betting services was a major concern and questioned why a financial application would incorporate gambling into its ecosystem.
WURA similarly said gambling addiction was already a serious problem in Nigeria and warned that making betting more accessible through everyday fintech platforms could worsen the situation.
Sharing a personal experience, X user Onyekwere Vincent revealed that he stopped gambling in 2022 after losing more than ₦700,000 in savings while trying to make quick money through betting.
Covenant also highlighted the risks associated with virtual betting and games such as Aviator, noting that users could lose significant amounts of money within a short period if they failed to control their betting habits.
Oluwaseun said betting had negatively affected some people around him, claiming that colleagues who had spent years working had struggled to achieve meaningful financial progress because of gambling.
EngrRay called for stronger action against betting in Nigeria, while another user, Just Passing By, questioned the combination of OPay’s loan services with easy access to betting.
Not Everyone Agrees With Calls for Restrictions
While several users raised concerns about the availability of betting services on OPay, others offered a different perspective.
Black Thunder argued that government restrictions would not necessarily stop Nigerians from accessing foreign betting platforms online. The user maintained that adults should be allowed to make their own choices and urged the government to focus on more pressing issues.
KAIRO also advocated responsible gambling, arguing that the focus should be on ensuring that users observe age restrictions and gamble responsibly.
Another user, Eedriza, pointed out that other financial institutions also provide access to betting services and questioned why attention was being directed specifically at OPay.
Meanwhile, Blitz Visuals, who described himself as an OPay fan, said the feature appeared to be driven more by profit than by the interests of customers.
The reactions followed the appearance of a game centre on OPay’s platform, where users could reportedly access multiple betting services offering games including Aviator.
