A prominent Nigerian lawyer has threatened to take fintech company Opay to court over what he described as an unreasonable delay in receiving his account statement.
The lawyer disclosed this in a post on his X account, formerly known as Twitter, stating that he had made the request a considerable time ago but had yet to receive the document from the financial.
The post attracted reactions from some of his followers, with several users sharing similar concerns about their experiences with Opay’s customer service.
One user criticised the company’s customer support while acknowledging the strength of its network.
“Opay’s customer service is very poor but the network is superb.”
Another commenter urged the lawyer to proceed with legal action, claiming that their own account had been restricted without explanation.
“Please do. My account has been restricted for absolutely no reason and they’re asking me to get a court order.”
However, not everyone reported experiencing difficulties when requesting account statements. Some users said they had received theirs without significant delays.
Despite this, several commenters continued to raise concerns about Opay’s customer service, particularly when customers encounter problems with their accounts or transactions.
Opay Has Faced Similar Customer Complaints
This is not the first time Opay has faced criticism over its handling of customer complaints.
In 2024, customers also raised concerns after reporting unexplained deductions from their accounts during a period of technical difficulties.
According to the report, some customers attempted to transfer funds but the transactions failed because of technical problems. Despite the failed transactions, the customers said their accounts were debited, while they did not receive transaction receipts.
The affected customers were reportedly refunded eventually. However, they alleged that Opay was slow to respond during the incident and did not immediately provide an explanation for the transaction problems.
The latest complaint has once again drawn attention to the importance of responsive customer support, particularly for financial institutions handling customers’ funds and sensitive account information.
