OPay has dismissed a viral message claiming that the fintech company will suspend transactions and other account services indefinitely from September 1, 2026.
The message, which has been circulating widely among customers, carried OPay’s name and its “Beyond Banking” slogan. It reportedly advised users to withdraw their money “as soon as possible,” alleging that the company would begin a “long indefinite break” on Tuesday.
The claim sparked concern among OPay customers, many of whom use the platform daily for money transfers, bill payments, savings and other financial transactions.
However, OPay has confirmed that the message is false and that there are no plans to suspend its services.
In a statement addressing the claim, the company said: “OPay is not going on break by September. We’re here, and we’re going nowhere!”
The fintech also encouraged customers to examine the message carefully, noting that several “red flags” indicate that it was not issued by OPay.
The fake notice has nevertheless highlighted the risks faced by customers of digital financial platforms, particularly when fraudulent messages are designed to look like genuine corporate announcements.
Such claims can cause unnecessary panic, especially when they involve people’s money. Customers who believe a financial platform is about to shut down may rush to withdraw funds, transfer money elsewhere or contact customer support at the same time. Scammers can also take advantage of the confusion to target worried users.
OPay advised customers to verify financial-related information before acting on or sharing it. The company said users should depend on its recognised official channels for genuine announcements and updates.
While the clarification has put an end to the immediate speculation about a shutdown, the incident underscores the importance of verifying information before taking action, particularly when money is involved.
OPay maintains that its services remain available and that it has no plan to suspend operations or embark on an indefinite break from September 1, 2026.
