Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, to remain focused on good governance and continue working to improve the lives of residents following his re-election.
The former president made the appeal during a congratulatory visit to Adeleke at his country residence in Ede, Osun State.
A statement issued on Monday in Osogbo by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said Obasanjo also prayed for greater success for Adeleke in his second term.
Obasanjo encouraged the governor to remain committed to serving the people and ensuring that they benefit from democratic governance.
“Continue to deliver good governance. Continue to meet the needs of your people,” the former president told Adeleke.
Responding, Adeleke thanked God and the people of Osun for the confidence reposed in his administration.
The governor also expressed appreciation to Obasanjo for the visit and pledged to remain dedicated to the people of the state.
“Baba, I thank you for this surprise visit. I promise never to disappoint God, Osun people and all lovers of democracy who made our victory possible,” Adeleke said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke the winner of Saturday’s governorship election in the early hours of Sunday.
Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 444,815 votes.
The candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Najeem Salaam, finished third with 17,180 votes.
INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, who announced the results at the commission’s collation centre, said 985,079 valid votes were recorded, while 20,721 votes were rejected.
The total number of votes cast stood at 1,005,800.
Ogunwole, who is the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, formally declared Adeleke the winner of the election.
