Dr. Ikenna Erinne, a US-based Nigerian cardiologist, reportedly held his estranged partner and their children hostage at gunpoint for three hours before taking his own life when police arrived, his father-in-law, Francis Van-Lare, has alleged.

The 36-year-old’s tragic death has sparked widespread reactions among Nigerians at home and abroad. Initial reports suggested that financial strain, including a $15,000 monthly child support ruling, contributed to his suicide. However, new revelations indicate a far more disturbing sequence of events.

Allegations by Father-in-Law

Van-Lare, a socialite, made the claims in a Facebook post, responding to speculations surrounding his daughter’s involvement in the case.

“While my daughter was involved in a custody battle, I only became aware around 3 a.m. Nigerian time last Monday that the deceased held her and her children at gunpoint for three hours after losing the case,” he wrote.

According to him, the family’s nanny managed to escape and alerted the police. Upon their arrival, Erinne turned the gun on himself.

Van-Lare also revealed that Erinne was facing three counts of kidnapping with a deadly weapon, each carrying a sentence of 25 years to life in prison. “I guess he decided to kill himself instead of facing the charges,” he added.

Despite the tragic turn of events, Van-Lare expressed sympathy for the late doctor’s family, clarifying that his daughter was not to blame for his actions.

“I thank God it did not escalate to where he shot my daughter, grandchildren, and himself,” he stated.

Debunking Misinformation

Following the incident, social media was flooded with claims that Erinne’s ex-partner was a white woman who had allegedly used the legal system against him. However, Facebook user Amanda Chisom refuted these reports, clarifying that the mother of his children is an Igbo woman—Van-Lare’s daughter.

“Ikenna did not marry a white woman. He had children with an Igbo woman. However, they were never married. He called off the wedding, largely due to family concerns,” Chisom wrote.

She described Erinne as a quiet and reserved man, noting that his personality may have contributed to how he handled his struggles.

A Tragic End, Lingering Debates

The case has reignited discussions on mental health challenges faced by Nigerian men in the diaspora, the fairness of family court rulings, and the financial burdens fathers often bear in custody battles.

As Van-Lare summed up the tragedy, he stated, “Everyone is a loser here. No winners.”
