The Coca-Cola System in Nigeria, comprising Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited and its bottler, the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), has opened a state-of-the-art Packaging Collection Hub in Apapa, Lagos. This facility can process up to 13,000 metric tonnes of plastic bottles annually, marking a major step forward in Nigeria’s plastic recycling efforts.

The hub will collect PET plastic, process it into clean bales, and support rPET production through third-party partnerships. This initiative aligns with Coca-Cola’s global sustainability targets, including increasing recycled content in packaging and recovering 70% to 75% of the bottles and cans it introduces into the market by 2035.

$1 Billion Investment in Sustainability

Over the past decade, Coca-Cola has invested $1.5 billion in Nigeria’s economy. Now, the company is doubling down with a $1 billion commitment over the next five years. The goal is to expand recycling centres and reduce reliance on imported raw materials.

Government Applauds Initiative

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser on Circular Economy, praised the hub as a step toward a cleaner environment. He said, “This facility will serve as a key centre for collecting and recycling PET plastics, helping to reduce plastic pollution in our communities.”

Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Trade and Investment, also commended the project, calling it a boost for sustainability, economic growth, and environmental responsibility. She emphasized that it aligns with the government’s vision for a self-sustaining Nigeria.

Coca-Cola’s Vision for a Greener Future

Zoran Bogdanovic, CEO of Coca-Cola HBC (NBC’s parent company), stressed the company’s commitment to reducing plastic waste. “This facility is a major milestone in our efforts to collect and recycle packaging in Nigeria. We are proud to partner with the government to tackle waste management and drive economic growth,” he said.

Luisa Ortega, President of Coca-Cola’s Africa Operating Unit, reaffirmed the company’s long-standing commitment to Nigeria, where it has invested for nearly 75 years.

A Turning Point for Nigeria’s Industry

Senator John Enoh, Minister of State for Industry, described the new hub as a game-changer for Nigeria’s industrial sector. “This project proves that industries can go beyond profit-making and take real responsibility for the environment,” he said.

75 Years of Impact in Nigeria

For nearly 75 years, Coca-Cola has played a key role in Nigeria’s economy, employing over 2,800 people across eight production plants, 11 depots, and 58 commercial territories. The company continues to invest in sustainable packaging, recycling infrastructure, and environmental awareness programs.
