The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of failing to stop the rising wave of killings across Nigeria. According to the party, the government has shown no clear strategy or political will to tackle the growing crisis.

In a statement on Friday, SDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, described the situation as alarming. He said non-state actors now operate freely, while the country’s security structure continues to weaken.

Killings Surge Nationwide as Government Stalls

Aiyenigba expressed concern over recent attacks in both the North and South. He highlighted the massacre of over 100 people in Plateau State by suspected herders. He also recalled the mob killing of 15 citizens in Edo, believed to be hunters returning from the Niger Delta.

Just days ago, another group known as Makmuda reportedly killed scores in a fresh attack. Aiyenigba noted that these tragic events have become a daily reality. He warned that Nigeria is turning into a “killing field,” as innocent lives are lost without consequence.

Politicians Focus on 2027 Instead of Saving Lives

The SDP criticized politicians for focusing on future elections while ignoring the urgent security crisis. Aiyenigba said many leaders seem more interested in 2027 than in protecting the people they claim to serve.

“It’s shameful,” he said. “While citizens live in fear, leaders are busy plotting political moves. This disconnect shows a lack of compassion and duty.”

Tinubu Urged to Take Responsibility and Act Now

The party called on President Tinubu to step up and fulfill his constitutional duty. Section 14(2)(b) of the Nigerian Constitution clearly states that the security and welfare of the people must be the government’s top priority.

Aiyenigba stressed that the President must act with courage and urgency. “Nigeria needs bold leadership now more than ever. Lives are at stake, and silence is no longer an option,” he said.

The SDP warned that if the government cannot protect its people, it loses its legitimacy. Aiyenigba argued that no government can claim to exist while citizens die without protection.

“First, we must secure the people. Only then can we talk about elections,” he stated. “Without a safe and united country, democracy cannot survive.”

The party mourned the victims of recent attacks and urged all Nigerians to demand accountability. It also called on civil society, religious leaders, and the international community to put pressure on the government to act decisively.
