  • Nigeria Becomes Top Exporter of Medical Professionals

Nigeria is rapidly becoming the world’s largest exporter of medical professionals, a trend that poses a severe threat to the country’s healthcare system, according to Dr. Saheed Babajide, Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

Mass Exodus of Doctors Weakens Healthcare System

Raising concerns over the mass exodus of doctors, Dr. Babajide warned that the departure of both young and experienced medical professionals is crippling the nation’s healthcare sector. He stressed that not only are junior doctors leaving, but also seasoned consultants—key figures in training the next generation of healthcare workers.

Supporting this alarming trend, NMA President Prof. Bala Audu confirmed that Nigeria now leads globally in exporting health professionals. He revealed that the country loses an estimated $2 billion annually to medical tourism, as Nigerians increasingly seek treatment abroad due to a shortage of qualified doctors and poor healthcare infrastructure at home.

NMA Calls for Urgent Government Intervention

The NMA has urged the federal and state governments to declare a state of emergency in the health sector. The association is advocating for the implementation of policies like the National Policy on Health Workforce Retention, which aims to improve salaries, working conditions, and access to necessary medical equipment. These measures, they argue, could help retain medical talent and even encourage Nigerian doctors abroad to return.

Dr. Babajide also criticized recent government policies, such as the conversion of Epe General Hospital into a Federal Medical Centre, stating that such moves may reduce healthcare accessibility without addressing the root causes of the doctor migration crisis.

As the exodus continues, the NMA warns that Nigeria’s healthcare system is heading toward a critical shortage of skilled professionals, one that could leave millions of citizens without adequate medical care unless urgent action is taken.
