…Envoy Dismissed Over Controversial Remarks
New Zealand has dismissed its high commissioner to the UK, Phil Goff, following remarks he made that appeared to question former U.S. President Donald Trump‘s understanding of history.
Foreign Minister Winston Peters confirmed the decision, calling Goff’s comments “disappointing” and stating they had made his position “untenable.”
What Sparked the Controversy?
The controversy erupted during a Chatham House event in London, where Goff posed a question to Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen. He referenced a 1938 speech by Winston Churchill in which Churchill condemned the Munich Agreement, saying to then-Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain:
“You had the choice between war and dishonour. You chose dishonour, yet you will have war.”
Goff then asked Valtonen:
“President Trump has restored the bust of Churchill to the Oval Office. But do you think he really understands history?”
Valtonen sidestepped the question, simply remarking that Churchill had made “timeless remarks.”
Government Responds Swiftly
The New Zealand government wasted no time in responding. Foreign Minister Peters emphasized that diplomats must uphold the country’s official stance, stating:
“When you are in that position, you represent the government and the policies of the day. You’re not able to free think, you are the face of New Zealand.”
Backlash Over Goff’s Removal
The decision has sparked criticism, with former Prime Minister Helen Clark denouncing the move as “a very thin excuse” to remove a respected diplomat.
Goff, who has served as New Zealand’s envoy to the UK since January 2023, has yet to comment on his dismissal.
