…Protesters Demand Akpabio’s Resignation

Tensions flared at the National Assembly on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and her husband arrived amid heated protests. Her supporters gathered near the Mopol Gate, waving placards that read “Akpabio must go” and “We stand with Senator Natasha.” They demanded the resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio over allegations of sexual harassment.

Counter-Protests in Support of Akpabio

At the same time, pro-Akpabio demonstrators staged a counter-protest, holding banners that accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of “serial blackmail” and defended Akpabio as a “father and friend.” The two groups clashed as tensions escalated.

Security Forces Disperse Protesters

Security personnel intervened, using tear gas to disperse Akpoti-Uduaghan’s supporters near the National Assembly Arcade. Despite this, the protesters regrouped at a nearby location to continue their demonstration.

Reactions from Senators and Analysts

Senate Deputy Chief Whip Onyekachi Nwaebonyi dismissed the harassment allegations, stating that he was present at Akpabio’s birthday celebration, where the alleged incident took place, and saw no misconduct.

Public affairs analyst Kelly Agaba urged Akpabio to step aside as Senate President to allow an impartial investigation. He also noted that Akpoti-Uduaghan is not the first to accuse Akpabio of sexual harassment, calling for a thorough inquiry.

Court Halts Senate’s Disciplinary Actions

In a new development, the Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the Senate from taking disciplinary action against Akpoti-Uduaghan. She had been referred to the Senate Ethics Committee after clashing with Akpabio, but her legal team argued that the move was premature.

With legal battles and protests intensifying, the crisis within the Senate continues to deepen, raising questions about the future of its leadership.
