Nigeria’s Minister of State for Industry, Trade, and Investment, Senator John Owan Enoh, has reaffirmed his commitment to fostering an inclusive industrial revolution, emphasizing the critical role of women in shaping the country’s economic future.
Speaking at an exclusive event titled “An Evening with the Honourable Minister of State for Industry: Inclusive Industrial Revolution Plan” in Lagos, Enoh engaged with top women industry leaders to discuss challenges, opportunities, and strategic solutions for greater female participation in Nigeria’s industrial sector.
“For our industrial revolution to succeed under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, it must be inclusive. Women are already making immense contributions to the industry, and their leadership is vital to driving economic growth,” Enoh stated.
He underscored the importance of recognizing women as equal partners in economic development, stressing that industries thrive on innovation and diversity. “The best economies and industrial powerhouses do not win by sidelining half of their best minds. This isn’t about gender, it’s about competence and competitiveness,” he added.
Women’s Leadership Vital to Industrial Progress
The Minister called on female industry leaders to take a more prominent role in shaping policies and initiatives that empower women in business. He assured them of continued government collaboration to tackle existing barriers and unlock new growth opportunities.
President of Commonwealth Business Women Africa, Mrs. Ngozi Oyewole, echoed these sentiments, urging policymakers to support women in securing greater economic and decision-making roles.
“Women are pivotal to Nigeria’s industrial revolution. Our insights, creativity, and expertise can drive sustainable growth, from manufacturing to technology and beyond,” Oyewole said. She proposed six key action areas: entrepreneurship, skills development, innovation, collaboration, advocacy for inclusive policies, and sustainability.
She further emphasized the need for women’s voices in major trade and investment discussions, particularly within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Industry Leaders Rally Behind Inclusion Efforts
Also speaking at the event, Ijeoma Isiolu, Treasurer of the Bank of Industry, lauded the Minister’s efforts in engaging women in industrial development. Representing BOI Managing Director Dr. Olasupo Olusi, she challenged the government to accelerate gender parity in the sector.
“Statistics suggest it will take centuries for women to catch up with men, but Nigeria has a history of defying the odds,” Isiolu noted. She thanked the Minister for providing a platform for women to share their aspirations and contribute to national development.
With the event aligning with International Women’s Day 2025’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” industry leaders remain hopeful that Enoh’s commitment will translate into concrete policies that propel women to the forefront of Nigeria’s industrial transformation.
