Lafarge Africa has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, in partnership with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA). This initiative aims to improve waste management in Lagos and supports Lafarge’s commitment to zero waste to landfill.
Details of the Partnership
The MOU was signed on Monday, February 17, 2025, at the Ministry of Environment’s office in Alausa. Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, CEO of Lafarge Africa, highlighted that this partnership is essential for creating a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.
Waste-to-Energy Initiative
As part of the agreement, Lafarge Africa will collect non-recyclable and combustible waste from Lagos dumpsites and businesses. This waste will be sent to Lafarge’s Ewekoro Plant, where it will be used as alternative fuel in cement production. Geocycle, Lafarge’s waste management arm, will oversee the entire process.

Contributing to Sustainability
This collaboration strengthens Lafarge Africa’s role in sustainable building practices. By using waste as fuel in cement production, the company will reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and decrease its carbon footprint.
Environmental Impact
The initiative will also reduce methane emissions from waste decomposition and CO₂ emissions from cement production. These efforts contribute to the global fight against climate change.
Lagos State’s Commitment to Circular Economy
Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, praised the MOU, calling it a crucial step toward a cleaner, more sustainable Lagos. He emphasized that the partnership supports the state’s vision of using waste as a resource to drive economic and environmental growth.
Aiming for Zero Carbon
Wahab further shared Lagos’s goal of achieving a zero-carbon footprint. He noted that the city generates between 13,000 and 15,000 tons of waste daily and expressed the state’s commitment to addressing this challenge head-on.
LAWMA’s Vision for Innovation
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director of LAWMA, called the partnership a milestone in the state’s waste management efforts. He emphasized that this collaboration sets a new standard for how waste is processed and repurposed, supporting a circular economy and sustainable development.
