Gunmen kidnapped Oba James Dada Ogunyanda, the first-class traditional ruler and Obalohun of Okoloke, in the early hours of Thursday. They took him from his palace in Okoloke, Yagba West Local Government Area, Kogi State. The news spread quickly and caused panic among residents and the monarch’s family.

At first, the kidnappers did not contact the family, leaving them desperate and worried about the monarch’s safety. However, late Thursday evening, one of the kidnappers finally called a family member. They demanded N100 million for the Oba’s release. According to a royal household member who asked not to be named, the kidnappers gave only three days to pay and refused to negotiate. They also ended calls abruptly when the family pleaded for mercy.

Security Forces Launch Manhunt as Leaders Call for Action

The abduction caused fear across Kogi State, especially in Yagba West, where kidnappings have become more frequent. Concerned citizens gathered at the palace to pray and urged authorities to act quickly. The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the abduction and stated that investigations are underway. Security forces and local vigilantes have formed a joint task force to track the kidnappers and rescue the monarch.

Meanwhile, Senator Sunday Karimi, who represents Kogi West Senatorial District, raised a motion of urgent public importance in the Senate. He called on the Federal Government to deploy all relevant security agencies to ensure the monarch’s safe release. He also urged stronger security measures for the area.

Senator Karimi praised President Bola Tinubu for directing the National Security Adviser to establish Forest Guards nationwide. He further called on the President to sign the Nigeria Forest Security Service (Establishment) Bill, 2025, which the National Assembly recently passed.
