As Nigeria basks in the glory of the Super Falcons‘ stunning victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, many have praised the players’ skill and resilience. The Falcons clinched the title in dramatic fashion, overcoming host nation Morocco in a thrilling 3–2 comeback win that left fans around the continent in awe.

But beyond the tactical brilliance and physical prowess displayed on the field lies a lesser-known but powerful element, spiritual preparation. For Ibrahim Musa Gusau, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), faith and spiritual consultation are key components of the nation’s football success.

Beyond the Pitch: Faith in Football

Contrary to the widely held view that sports and spirituality operate in separate spheres, Gusau believes they often intersect, particularly in football. This belief influences how he manages Nigeria’s national teams, including the Super Eagles, Super Falcons, and the youth squads, blending traditional preparation with divine guidance.

“Football is not just physical. It’s emotional, psychological, and yes, spiritual,” Gusau once said during a public address. His conviction has guided him to seek spiritual counsel, particularly from Primate Elijah Ayodele, the founder of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church.

What makes this partnership particularly intriguing is that Gusau, a devout Muslim, has consistently turned to a Christian cleric for spiritual insights. Their association dates back to the period leading up to the 2022 NFF presidential elections, during which Primate Ayodele boldly prophesied Gusau’s eventual victory, despite never having met him in person.

A Prophecy Fulfilled

At the height of the NFF leadership race, Primate Ayodele publicly urged then-president Amaju Pinnick not to seek re-election, declaring that Gusau had been divinely chosen to lead Nigerian football. True to the prophecy, Gusau emerged victorious in the highly competitive contest.

The cleric’s unwavering support made a strong impression on Gusau, who later invited him to the NFF headquarters in Abuja. During the meeting, the NFF boss expressed his gratitude and affirmed his commitment to incorporating spiritual counsel into his administration.

“I appreciate your visit and your prayers. We believe in the power of prayer and will continue to seek divine guidance,” Gusau said. “If your prophecy came to pass, then it means my success is your success. I will do everything in my power to serve Nigerians with excellence.”

A Trusted Advisor in Football and Beyond

Since then, Primate Ayodele has become a consistent presence in Gusau’s circle. Every February, the NFF president attends the cleric’s annual thanksgiving service, where he often recounts their remarkable connection.

At one of these events, Gusau shared how a journalist first introduced him to the prophet’s message. “He sent me a clip of Primate Ayodele speaking about the NFF election. He mentioned my name and said I would win. I was surprised because we had never met, and I don’t even live in Lagos. But his support was strong and unwavering,” he recalled.

Following his election, Gusau made it a point to thank the prophet in person. “He came to Abuja. We met, talked, and shared a meal. If he’s holding an event, I must attend—it would be wrong not to acknowledge what God has done through him.”

Strategic Prophecies and Private Counsel

While their relationship is public, many of the prophet’s insights are shared privately. According to insiders, Primate Ayodele often provides spiritual direction on game strategies, player selection, and team morale. He reportedly highlights critical moments in matches, potential threats from opponents, and spiritual tactics that could turn the tide in Nigeria’s favor.

At the July 2025 unveiling of his prophetic book, Warnings to the Nations (2025/2026 Edition), Ayodele foresaw the Super Falcons’ rise to the WAFCON final. However, he warned that the team must stay vigilant or risk losing the title at the last moment.

His words rang true as the Falcons faced intense pressure in the final. After conceding two early goals, Nigeria mounted an inspiring comeback. A late penalty awarded to Morocco threatened to derail the victory, but was ultimately overturned, allowing the Falcons to seal a dramatic win.

History of Accurate Prophecies

Primate Ayodele’s prophetic accuracy has become a reference point in Nigerian sports. He had previously warned that the Super Eagles would fall short at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a warning that came to fruition when they lost in the final despite a strong tournament run.

Such track records have earned Ayodele the informal title of “Spiritual Father of Nigerian Football.” His prophecies, while sometimes controversial, have become a topic of discussion in sports and religious circles alike.

A President Guided by Faith

Under Gusau’s leadership, the NFF appears committed to ensuring that football in Nigeria is not just guided by strategy and skill, but also by spiritual direction. As fans and players celebrate Nigeria’s WAFCON 2024 triumph, many now look beyond the field to the unseen efforts behind the scenes, including prayers and prophecies that may have played their part.

For Ibrahim Gusau, football is more than a game. It is a divine mission. And as long as he leads, spiritual guidance will continue to play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s journey on the pitch.
