Nigeria’s federal budget system, long plagued by inefficiency and disarray, is undergoing a significant transformation. This shift follows the appointment of Tanimu Yakubu as Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Rebuilding a Collaborative, Transparent Institution

In the past, the Budget Office faced frequent instability, inadequate leadership, and political interference. These challenges hindered progress, diminished professionalism, and steered the agency away from its core mission. President Tinubu’s decision to appoint Yakubu, a skilled economist and former Chief Economic Adviser, marked a turning point toward a more inclusive and accountable governance structure.

Yakubu quickly implemented reforms focusing on transparency, fiscal responsibility, and results-driven budgeting. This transformation contributed to a dramatic decline in inflation, from 34% to 15% by 2025, while making government spending more responsive to the diverse needs of citizens.

Redirecting Resources for Shared Growth and Equity

Yakubu’s leadership emphasized equitable growth. By realigning budget allocations, the government prioritized infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, and social welfare, ensuring that resources addressed the needs of all communities, especially the most vulnerable.

His administration also made strides in project monitoring, hiring consultants to ensure fair and efficient implementation. This effort not only minimized waste but also created a more inclusive, transparent process that built confidence among local and international investors.

Reforms in agriculture, particularly in empowering farmers and enhancing food security, have led to improved harvests and reduced food-related inflation. Additionally, key initiatives such as flood mitigation and healthcare support (with N120 billion allocated for these programs) have directly benefited marginalized groups and underserved populations.

Fostering Economic Stability and Institutional Innovation for All

Under Yakubu’s direction, the Budget Office became a model for effective, inclusive governance. Staff restructuring focused on expertise and collaborative performance, rather than political affiliation. As a result, internal coordination improved across departments, ensuring that the needs of various sectors, from fiscal policy to social spending, were met with efficiency and dedication.

The introduction of a state-of-the-art ICT Centre has further enhanced transparency, enabling improved tracking of budget outcomes and fostering greater accountability within the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning.

These initiatives are driving positive change. Nigeria’s foreign reserves now exceed $42 billion, oil production has surpassed 2.6 million barrels per day, and revenue generation has steadily increased. These improvements are built on an inclusive economic framework that considers the needs of all Nigerians.

President Tinubu’s commitment to promoting merit-based leadership and equitable governance is clearly evident in his appointment of Yakubu. Through thoughtful reforms and inclusive leadership, the Budget Office is now a vital force for progress and sustainable development for all citizens of Nigeria.
