HBO has announced that its latest instalment in the acclaimed Music Box documentary series, Wizkid: Long Live Lagos, will debut on Thursday, December 11, from 9:00 to 10:25 p.m. ET/PT. The film will also stream on HBO Max.
Directed by Karam Gill, known for Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby and Supervillain: The Making of Tekashi 6ix9ine, the documentary is part of a lineup created by Bill Simmons under the Music Box banner.
A Story of Global Influence Through African Music
Wizkid: Long Live Lagos examines how creativity and sound can reshape global understanding of Africa. The film follows Nigerian superstar Wizkid as he prepares for his landmark show at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a historic moment that marks him as the first African artist to headline the venue.
The documentary highlights Wizkid’s rise from Lagos to global stardom, tracing his journey from modest beginnings to international acclaim as a GRAMMY-winning performer. With Nigeria lacking a formal music industry structure during his early years, the film explores how his ambition, talent, and cultural pride fueled a career that helped reposition Africa on the world music map.
Through scenes across Nigeria and the UK, the documentary also delves into the complex ties between both countries, touching on colonial history and how modern African artists are redrawing global narratives through self-representation. Wizkid’s influence, the filmmakers argue, embodies a form of cultural resistance and a celebration of African identity.
