The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State has confirmed the death of one of its members, Nworie Christopher, who succumbed to gunshot injuries sustained during an attack on the party’s campaign office in GRA, Enugu, on October 10, 2026.
Christopher, who hailed from Affa in Udi Local Government Area of the state, reportedly died despite efforts by the party’s leadership to save his life.
According to the party, armed thugs attacked a peaceful gathering at the campaign office of its governorship candidate, Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, during the incident.

On Tuesday, October 13, Ohaa led a delegation of party officials to Christopher’s family to express their condolences. Members of the delegation included his deputy governorship candidate, Chief Frank Omeje; the state chairman, Engr. Ibuchukwu Obeta; the state secretary, Hon. Emmanuel Chukwujekwu Nebo; Prof. Uche Akubue; Hon. Emeke Okeke; and the state women leader.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Hon. Sampson Ukwu, Ohaa condemned the killing, describing it as part of an alarming increase in political violence allegedly targeting opposition members in the state.
“No election is worth a single drop of a citizen’s blood. Nworie Christopher went out to support a vision for a better Enugu. Today he is gone. His twin brother is left with an empty half of his world. His family is shattered,” Ohaa said.
He added that Christopher’s mother was devastated by the loss, insisting that the party would not be intimidated into silence.
“We will not be silenced by violence. We will not be intimidated. The blood of Nworie Christopher and all our injured members cries out for justice,” he stated.
The NDC described the October 10 incident as the latest in a series of violent attacks allegedly directed at its members and supporters in Enugu State.
The party cited an earlier attack on a ward meeting in Obuoffia, Nkanu West Local Government Area, on September 12, 2026, during which eight members reportedly sustained gunshot injuries.
It also alleged that some of its supporters had been tear-gassed, shot at and brutalised at the airport.
According to the party, the incidents raise serious concerns about the safety of opposition members and the ability of citizens to participate peacefully in the democratic process.
“This is no longer ordinary politics. It is a dangerous escalation that threatens the right of citizens to participate peacefully in the democratic process,” the statement said.
The party further called on the state government to address concerns over the reported attacks and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
NDC Demands Investigation
The NDC called on the Inspector-General of Police and other relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough, independent and transparent investigation into the October 10 attack, as well as the earlier incident in Obuoffia.
It urged the authorities to identify, arrest and prosecute everyone found to have planned, sponsored or carried out the attacks, regardless of their status or political affiliation.
Despite the incidents, the party, which is led nationally by presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi and is fielding Ohaa for the Enugu governorship election, said it remained committed to its political mission.
“The Rescue Mission for Ndi Enugu continues. No amount of violence will stop the will of the people,” the statement added.
The party concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of Christopher’s soul and expressing solidarity with his family over the loss.
