The Federal Government has been urged to intensify the fight against fake and substandard products in Nigeria, with renewed concerns about the potential danger counterfeit goods pose to human lives and the confidence of consumers who spend their hard-earned money on everyday necessities.

The concern is particularly serious when it comes to alcoholic drinks, as counterfeit or adulterated beverages may contain unsafe substances capable of causing severe illness or death.

A video showing operatives of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) at a shop where fake alcoholic drinks were reportedly being produced has drawn attention to the importance of stronger efforts to identify and remove dangerous products from circulation.

The footage serves as a reminder of why product safety must be treated as a matter of public health rather than merely a commercial issue.

Alcoholic beverages produced outside the required safety and regulatory standards can expose consumers to serious health risks, particularly when their ingredients are unknown or the products have been adulterated.

Consumers who purchase such drinks may have no reliable way of knowing what they are drinking, especially when counterfeit products are packaged to resemble established brands.

Depending on their composition, contaminated or adulterated alcoholic beverages can cause poisoning, organ damage and other severe complications. Exposure to certain toxic substances can also be fatal.

The danger is that unsuspecting buyers may consume these products at home, in bars, at social gatherings or during celebrations without realising that what they have purchased may be unsafe.

This makes the fight against fake alcoholic drinks a matter of urgency. Protecting consumers requires effective inspections, laboratory testing, public awareness and decisive action against those responsible for manufacturing and distributing dangerous products.

Beyond the risk to human life, counterfeit products represent a betrayal of consumer trust.

Nigerians work hard to earn their money and deserve the confidence that the products they purchase are genuine, safe and suitable for their intended use.

Whether someone is buying alcoholic beverages, food, medicine, cosmetics or household products, the expectation should be that the item meets applicable safety and quality standards.

Even at trade fairs, shopping centres and established markets, consumers should not have to live in constant fear that a product bearing a familiar brand name could be fake.

When counterfeiters imitate trusted brands, they put consumers at risk while undermining legitimate manufacturers and businesses that invest in quality and regulatory compliance.

The responsibility for tackling this problem cannot rest on consumers alone. Authorities, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and event organisers all have roles to play in preventing fake and unsafe products from reaching the public.

The Federal Government should strengthen support for regulatory agencies, including NAFDAC, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), within their respective mandates.

Regular market inspections, improved product testing, effective intelligence gathering and stronger enforcement can help authorities identify counterfeit goods and prevent their circulation.

Those found manufacturing or selling fake and dangerous products should face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law.

NAFDAC and other relevant agencies should also continue educating the public on how to identify suspicious products, verify regulated goods and report suspected violations.

Consumers, in turn, should be cautious when purchasing alcoholic drinks and other regulated products, particularly when packaging appears tampered with, prices seem unusually low or sellers cannot provide credible product information.

However, public awareness must go hand in hand with effective enforcement. Warning Nigerians about fake products is not enough if dangerous goods continue to find their way into the marketplace.

Protecting Lives Must Come First

The call for the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on fake and substandard products reflects the need to give the issue greater national attention.

The objective should be clear: save lives, protect public health, safeguard consumers’ hard-earned money and restore confidence in the Nigerian marketplace.

Every Nigerian deserves to purchase a product without fearing that it could endanger their health or the lives of their loved ones.

The video showing NAFDAC operatives at a shop reportedly involved in the production of fake alcoholic drinks underscores the importance of continued vigilance and enforcement. However, the specific location, date and circumstances of the operation should be confirmed before further claims are made about the incident.

Ultimately, the fight against counterfeit products must move beyond occasional enforcement operations to a sustained effort that prevents dangerous goods from reaching consumers in the first place.

A bottle of drink should never become a death sentence, and a consumer should never have to gamble with their life to get value for their money. Protecting Nigerians from fake products must be a national priority.
