The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the remand of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at Kuje Correctional Centre.

Justice Mohammed Umar issued the order in a brief ruling, directing that Sowore remain in custody pending the hearing and determination of his application seeking a stay of the court’s earlier decision revoking his bail and issuing a bench warrant for his arrest.

The court also dismissed Sowore’s request for the judge to withdraw from the case over allegations of bias.

Following the ruling, Justice Umar adjourned proceedings until June 24 to hear the application for a stay of execution.

The application was filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika.

Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, arrived at the court premises alongside supporters carrying placards.

The judge had earlier, on June 16, revoked the defendant’s bail after he failed to appear for trial. Acting on an oral application by counsel to the State Security Service (SSS), Akinkolu Kehinde, the court also issued a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest.

The SSS is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false claims against President Bola Tinubu by describing him as “a criminal” in posts published on X and Facebook.
