Vodafone has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in mobile connectivity by making the world’s first space-based video call using standard 4G and 5G smartphones. This innovation has the potential to extend coverage to remote areas without existing mobile service.
The call, conducted via satellite, allows users in areas lacking traditional mobile coverage to make and receive video calls, browse the internet, and use messaging services. Unlike existing satellite communication systems, Vodafone’s technology eliminates the need for specialized satellite phones, dishes, or terminals. Instead, smartphones seamlessly switch between terrestrial and space-based networks, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity.
“Today’s call is a landmark achievement for Europe in this exciting next technology frontier. It comes 40 years after Vodafone made the UK’s very first mobile phone call,” Vodafone stated.
The breakthrough was demonstrated at Vodafone’s newly established space-to-land gateway, where astronaut Tim Peake and Vodafone Group CEO Margherita Della Valle showcased the technology. The system operates through BlueBird satellites, developed by Vodafone’s partner AST SpaceMobile, serving as an extension of Vodafone’s existing terrestrial networks.
“Together, the satellite service and terrestrial network will provide Europe with a robust communications infrastructure, enabling connectivity anywhere, including remote locations such as mountains or open seas, while also enhancing overall network resilience,” Vodafone added.
The satellite-powered service, utilizing AST SpaceMobile’s technology, is expected to launch in Europe by the end of 2025.
Growing Competition in Satellite Communications
The satellite communication sector is becoming increasingly competitive, with industry leaders such as Apple, T-Mobile, and SpaceX developing their own satellite-based connectivity solutions. Apple has integrated emergency satellite texting and location sharing into its iPhone 14 series, while SpaceX demonstrated a Starlink-powered video call in 2023 using unmodified mobile phones. However, unlike Vodafone’s latest achievement, SpaceX’s call did not originate from a remote area without existing mobile coverage.
As the race for universal connectivity accelerates, Vodafone’s latest breakthrough could play a crucial role in bridging the digital divide, ensuring seamless communication regardless of location.
