Two hikers in the Czech Republic made a stunning discovery while walking near an overgrown forest. They uncovered a treasure trove estimated to be worth over $340,000. The Museum of East Bohemia has taken possession of the artifacts.

Hidden Gold in a Forest Wall

According to the museum, the hikers found gold coins, jewelry, and tobacco bags weighing about 15 pounds. The items were stored in two containers placed inside an artificial stone wall.

The first container was an aluminum jar. Inside, the hikers found 598 gold coins, neatly arranged in columns and wrapped in black fabric. Local media estimated the value at 7.5 million Czech crowns, or around $341,000.

Nearby, they found a second metal box. It held 16 tobacco bags, 10 bracelets, a fine wire mesh bag, a comb, a powder coat, and a chain with a key. All the items were made from a yellow metal.

Coins from the 19th Century

A museum expert stated the coins appear to have been underground for over 100 years. The oldest coin dates back to 1808. The currency includes coins from France, Belgium, the Ottoman Empire, and Austria-Hungary. Small markings show they were intended for use in former Yugoslavia, which existed from 1918 to 1992.

The museum called the collection “a very specific set.” However, experts are still analyzing the jewelry and other objects. They aim to determine the exact age and the type of yellow metal used.

Miroslav Novák, head of the museum’s archaeology department, said the discovery is unique. He noted that people have buried valuables since prehistoric times. “In uncertain times, people hid treasure hoping to retrieve it later,” Novák explained.

The museum continues to study the artifacts to learn more about their origins and significance.
