Trump Orders Major Election Overhaul, Mandates Voter Citizenship Proof

President Donald Trump signed a sweeping executive order on Tuesday, implementing major changes to U.S. election procedures. The order mandates documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration in federal elections and requires that all ballots be received by Election Day, two measures that could significantly reshape voting across the country.

The directive claims that the U.S. has “failed to enforce basic and necessary election protections” and instructs states to collaborate with federal agencies on voter data sharing and election crime prosecution. It also threatens to withhold federal funding from states that refuse to comply.

A Controversial Crackdown on Voting

Trump’s move builds on his long-standing claims, made without substantial evidence, that U.S. elections are susceptible to widespread fraud. His latest order echoes provisions of the stalled Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, a Republican-backed bill that also seeks to impose strict citizenship verification requirements.

Voting rights groups argue that the order could disenfranchise millions. A 2023 Brennan Center for Justice report estimated that 21.3 million U.S. citizens, about 9% of the voting-age population, lack immediate access to citizenship documents. There are also concerns that married women who changed their names may face difficulties registering to vote.

State Officials, Democrats Vow Legal Fight

Legal experts and state officials are already questioning the order’s constitutionality, given that the Constitution grants states primary authority over elections. Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold called the directive “unlawful,” while Democratic Rep. Joe Morelle denounced it as “immoral and illegal.”

Democratic election lawyer Marc Elias signaled a swift legal challenge, declaring on social media, “This will not stand. We will sue.”

The order also pressures the U.S. Election Assistance Commission to revise federal voting system guidelines, including a push to ban barcodes and QR codes on ballots. This could directly impact voting systems in states like Georgia, where voters use touchscreen machines that print ballots with scannable codes for tabulation.

Republicans Applaud, Trump Promises More Action

Despite the backlash, Republicans are rallying behind the order. Wisconsin Rep. Bryan Steil, chairman of the House committee overseeing elections, called it a “welcome action to secure our elections.” Trump ally Mike Lindell, a vocal election conspiracy theorist, quickly launched a fundraising campaign in support of the new restrictions.

Trump, referencing election fraud as he signed the order, stated, “this will end it, hopefully”, adding that additional election-related actions would be announced in the coming weeks.

With legal challenges looming and states preparing for battle, the fight over America’s election laws is far from over.
