Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, has called on Presidents-General (PGs) of town unions to support Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s new security initiative, Operation Udo Ga-Achi, aimed at restoring total security and eradicating criminal activities in the state.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU) at the Government House, Awka, on Saturday, February 1, 2025, Mefor assured that the government remains committed to reclaiming Ihiala and other areas affected by insecurity.

“Anambra is a great state, but criminals are trying to disrupt its progress,” Mefor stated. “That is why the Anambra State Homeland Security Law established Agunechemba, a new security outfit replacing the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG), and launched Operation Udo Ga-Achi. The security architecture took months to plan, involving advanced technology, a Command and Control Center, Call Centers, a sophisticated tracking system, and a dedicated strike force. The initiative is already yielding significant results.”

He emphasized the crucial role of town union leaders in ensuring the success of the new security framework. “This initiative cannot work without the PGs. The law mandates that you oversee security operations in your communities. Security is beyond politics—we must secure our land first,” he added.

Government Committed to Reclaiming Troubled Areas

Highlighting the government’s determination to restore peace in troubled areas, Mefor noted that while several local governments have been reclaimed from criminal elements, challenges persist in Ihiala and parts of Orumba. “We are actively addressing these challenges. A full-scale security operation is underway, and we urge residents to report suspicious activities by calling 5111. Whistleblowers are protected and even rewarded for credible information,” he assured.

Crackdown on Criminal Activities and Harmful Practices

The commissioner also stressed the need to curb activities that enable crime, including fraudulent native doctors and money rituals. “Governor Soludo’s administration is committed to protecting traditional medicine while eliminating harmful practices that deceive and endanger people. This is about preserving our cultural heritage and ensuring safety for all,” he said.

Security Officials Urge PGs to Take Responsibility

In their remarks, Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, and Special Assistant on Cyber Security, Chigbo JohnChris, urged PGs to take responsibility for security in their communities and provide detailed reports, as required by the new law.

ASATU Pledges Full Cooperation

ASATU National President, Barr. T.A. Akpudo, expressed appreciation for the government’s trust in the town unions and pledged their commitment to supporting the security efforts.
