A large-scale search operation is underway off the New South Wales coast for a fisherman believed to have been dragged overboard by a shark.

Paul Barning, an experienced game fisherman, disappeared on Sunday while competing in a fishing tournament off Port Stephens, north of Newcastle. The competition was called off after the incident.

More than 40 boats joined police in an immediate search effort, but Barning did not resurface, NSW Police Superintendent Joe McNulty told reporters on Monday. The search, spanning 1,500 nautical miles due to fast-moving currents, will continue on Tuesday, extending as far south as Jervis Bay.

“It is a large search area because the current is moving so fast,” Supt McNulty said.

Lack of Life Jacket May Have Played a Role

Authorities believe the tragic accident may have been preventable had Barning been wearing a life jacket.

“He’s 55km offshore without a life jacket … tragically, that may have assisted in his recovery,” McNulty said, urging all boaters, regardless of experience, to wear proper safety gear.

‘Freak Accident’ Stuns Fishing Community

Steve Lamond, president of the NSW Game Fishing Association and a longtime friend of Barning, described the incident as a “freak accident.”

“He was basically dragged overboard, underwater, and disappeared,” Lamond told AAP.

Authorities Dismiss Shark Attack Theories

Despite speculation, police do not believe Barning was attacked by the shark. Instead, investigators suspect he became entangled in the fishing line as the shark took off, pulling him into the water.

“The fishing line has pulled taut and may have contributed to him going over the side of his vessel,” Supt McNulty said.

Ongoing Search Amid Challenging Conditions

Authorities continue their search, holding out hope for recovery efforts despite the difficult conditions.
