Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said leaders who fail to perform should be voted out, provided elections remain credible and transparent.

Jonathan, who lost his re-election bid in 2015, is reportedly considering a presidential run in 2027 against President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking at the 2025 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) Democracy Dialogue in Accra, Ghana, Jonathan described electoral manipulation as one of the greatest threats to democracy in Africa.

In a statement on Saturday, GJF Communications Officer Wealth Dickson Ominabo explained that Jonathan warned of the dangers of democratic failure. According to him, when democracy does not meet citizens’ expectations, desperation often creates an opening for authoritarian rule.

Furthermore, Jonathan stressed that leaders must commit to building a system that guarantees a brighter future for the next generation while respecting citizens’ voices.

Democracy Under Strain

“Democracy in Africa is going through a period of strain and risks collapse unless stakeholders come together to rethink and reform it. Electoral manipulation remains one of the biggest threats in Africa.

“We in Africa must begin to rethink our democracy and shape it in a way that works for our people. One of the key problems is our electoral system. Politicians manipulate the process to cling to power at all costs.

“If we had proper elections, any leader who fails to perform would be voted out. However, in our case, people use the system to remain in power, even when citizens reject them.

“Our people want to enjoy their freedoms. They want their votes to count. Citizens also desire equitable representation and inclusivity. Beyond this, they demand good education, security, healthcare, jobs, and dignity. When leaders fail to provide these, the people lose hope.”

The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF), which hosted the dialogue, is dedicated to promoting democracy, peace, and inclusive governance across Africa. Since its establishment, the foundation has consistently championed electoral reforms, conflict resolution, and youth empowerment initiatives.

This 2025 edition of the Democracy Dialogue brought together policymakers, academics, civil society leaders, and former heads of state to debate the challenges facing African democracies.

Regional Implications of Electoral Failures

Jonathan’s warning resonates across the continent, where disputed elections have often triggered violence and instability. For instance, from Kenya to Sudan, many African nations continue to struggle with electoral credibility.

Analysts argue that Jonathan’s comments carry weight because of his decision in 2015 to concede defeat peacefully, setting an example for democratic transitions in Africa. Consequently, his position underscores the urgent need for electoral commissions and political leaders to prioritize fairness and transparency.

Role of the Youth

Jonathan also observed that youth participation in governance is rising. Nevertheless, he stressed that young leaders require mentorship and guidance from experienced elders to translate their passion into sustainable leadership.

Moreover, he urged African countries to invest in education, technology, and innovation, thereby creating opportunities that enable young people to contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
