Accidentally sending audio messages on your iPhone can be embarrassing, especially if private conversations or background noise get recorded without your knowledge. This often happens because of the Raise to Listen feature in the iPhone Messages app.

While designed for convenience, this feature can automatically record audio when you lift your phone to your ear, sometimes even when you didn’t intend to send a message. Fortunately, it’s easy to disable. Here’s how to take control.

What is Raise to Listen on iPhone?

Raise to Listen is a functionality in the iPhone Messages app that allows audio messages to play or record automatically when you bring the phone close to your ear.

Convenience: Makes it easier to listen to or reply with audio messages without tapping extra buttons.

Downside: Can trigger unintentionally, capturing unwanted sounds or private conversations.

Many users find this feature more annoying than useful because it can start recording the moment you pick up your iPhone after receiving a message.

Step-by-Step Guide to Disable Raise to Listen

Follow these steps to stop accidental audio recordings on your iPhone:

1. Open Messages Settings

Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.

Scroll down and select Messages to access the app’s specific settings.

2. Locate Raise to Listen

Within the Messages settings, scroll until you see the Raise to Listen option.

3. Turn Off Raise to Listen

Toggle the switch next to Raise to Listen from green to gray.

This disables the automatic recording feature.

Once disabled, your iPhone will no longer start recording when you lift it to your ear.

How to Send Audio Messages After Disabling Raise to Listen

Turning off Raise to Listen doesn’t stop you from sending audio messages intentionally. To send a voice message:

1. Open a conversation in the Messages app.

2. Tap the sound wave icon in the text box.

3. Record your message manually and send it when ready.

This gives you full control over when your iPhone records audio, preventing embarrassing accidental recordings.

Final Thoughts

The Raise to Listen feature can be helpful, but for many iPhone users, it’s more of a nuisance. Disabling it ensures you won’t accidentally capture audio messages, while still allowing manual recordings when needed.
