After sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the next thing on every candidate’s mind is checking their result. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) usually releases UTME results a few days after the examination, and candidates can access them either by SMS or through the JAMB e-Facility portal.
Once you have your score, the next step is understanding what it means and preparing for the admission process.
Method 1: Check Your JAMB Result by SMS
This option is suitable for both smartphones and basic mobile phones. An internet connection is not required.
Follow these steps:
– Ensure the phone number you used during JAMB registration has at least ₦50 airtime.
– Open your messaging application.
– Type UTMERESULT (without spaces).
– Send the message to 55019 or 66019.
– Wait for JAMB to send your subject scores and overall UTME score by SMS.
Important: You must send the message from the same phone number used during registration. Using a different number will prevent the system from retrieving your result.
If you do not receive a response immediately, confirm that you have sufficient airtime and used the correct phone number. In some cases, network congestion may delay the response.
Method 2: Check Your Result Through the JAMB Portal
Candidates can also access their results online through the official JAMB e-Facility portal.
Steps to follow:
1. Visit the JAMB e-Facility portal.
2. Sign in with the email address and password used during registration.
3. Locate and click Check UTME Result.
4. Your overall score and subject-by-subject breakdown will appear on your dashboard.
If you cannot remember your password, use the Forgot Password option to reset it through your registered email address.
It is advisable to save the portal because you will also need it later for admission processing, O’Level result upload, and checking your admission status.
Understanding Your JAMB Score
Your UTME score is one of the factors universities consider during admission, but it is not the only requirement.
Generally:
– 180 and above – Meets the minimum benchmark accepted by many institutions.
– 200–249 – Competitive for several state universities and many degree programmes.
– 250–299 – Strong score for many federal universities and competitive courses.
– 300 and above – Excellent performance and a stronger chance of securing admission into highly competitive programmes such as Medicine, Law, Pharmacy and Engineering.
However, scoring high does not automatically guarantee admission.
Every institution determines its own admission requirements, while individual departments often have separate cut-off marks that candidates must meet. Your O’Level subjects and grades must also satisfy the requirements of your chosen course.
In addition, many universities conduct Post-UTME examinations or screening exercises before offering admission.
Common Issues Candidates May Encounter
Result Withheld
If your result has been withheld, JAMB has placed it under review. This could be due to suspected examination malpractice, biometric verification issues or other irregularities.
Candidates should wait for official communication from JAMB and avoid anyone claiming they can release withheld results in exchange for money.
Candidate Marked Absent
If you sat for the examination but your result shows Candidate Absent, visit the nearest JAMB office with your registration slip for assistance.
Result Not Yet Available
JAMB releases results in batches. If your result is unavailable shortly after the examination, wait between 24 and 48 hours before checking again.
Where the delay extends beyond several days, contact an accredited JAMB CBT centre or the nearest JAMB office for guidance.
What You Should Do After Checking Your Result
After confirming your score, one of the most important documents you need is your JAMB Original Result Slip.
This is different from the SMS notification or the result displayed on your dashboard. The Original Result Slip contains your passport photograph and serves as the official document required during:
– Post-UTME registration
– Admission screening
– School clearance
– Final admission processing
Ensure you obtain this document early to avoid unnecessary delays later in the admission process.
Prepare Early for Admission
Many candidates lose admission opportunities not because of poor UTME scores, but because they miss important deadlines, fail to upload required documents or overlook key admission procedures.
