Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has denied any links to militant groups, rejecting claims that he supports elements threatening the state’s peace.
His Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, released a statement on Monday to address the rumors. The governor reaffirmed his commitment to stability and distanced himself from any group seeking to disrupt order.
Last week, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu suspended the governor, his deputy, and the state House of Assembly for six months. He cited concerns about possible unrest that could endanger oil installations in the state.
Governor Dismisses Reports of Oil Facility Attacks
“Our attention has been drawn to several malicious videos claiming explosions at oil and gas facilities in Rivers State,” the statement read. “The creators of these fake videos are trying to link them to supporters of Governor Fubara.”
The governor emphasized that affected communities had already dismissed these claims. Local reports confirmed that no such incidents occurred and that vital infrastructure remains intact.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has no ties to any militant group. He does not support any actions that could threaten peace, security, or economic stability,” the statement added.
Fubara Condemns Misinformation, Calls for Accountability
Fubara also warned against individuals exploiting the political crisis to incite unrest. He urged security agencies to investigate those spreading false information.
“Bloggers and social media influencers must stop spreading fake news. Their fabricated reports have already led to misguided decisions that do not benefit Rivers State,” he cautioned.
The governor called on law enforcement to take swift action against those responsible for the misinformation. He stressed that ensuring peace remains his top priority.
