Passengers and crew members aboard a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv reportedly intervened to prevent a possible disaster after the co-pilot attacked and stabbed the captain during the journey.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 30, aboard Flight FZ1073, which was carrying 174 people, according to Israeli officials cited by Reuters.
The Boeing 737 was travelling from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv when a violent confrontation reportedly broke out inside the cockpit.

The incident forced the aircraft into a sudden and dramatic descent before passengers and crew members managed to enter the cockpit and overpower the co-pilot.
The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. All passengers later continued their journey to Israel on a replacement flydubai aircraft.
The pilot injured in the incident has been identified as Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national and experienced Boeing 737 pilot.
According to reports, Machchhar was attacked by his co-pilot inside the cockpit while the aircraft was in flight.
Despite suffering injuries, the captain reportedly managed to activate the mechanism that opened the cockpit door. His action allowed passengers and crew members to enter the flight deck and confront the attacker.
Israeli officials said passengers then helped overpower and restrain the co-pilot.
Machchhar was subsequently taken to a hospital in Tabuk for treatment. India’s embassy in Riyadh said the pilot was receiving medical attention and was reported to be in stable condition.
Reports also indicate that Machchhar had previously worked for Indian airline SpiceJet before joining flydubai in 2022. His professional profile lists thousands of hours of experience flying Boeing 737 aircraft.
The emergency became particularly dangerous when the aircraft suddenly lost altitude.
Flight-tracking data indicated that the Boeing 737 descended by roughly 14,000 feet in less than a minute. Reuters reported that the aircraft lost nearly 14,000 feet in about 30 seconds during the episode.
Passengers later described the aircraft’s sudden movement as frightening.
One passenger, Almog Italie, told Reuters that the aircraft initially felt as though it was experiencing severe turbulence before passengers realised that something much more serious was happening inside the cockpit.
The rapid descent occurred while the aircraft was travelling through Saudi airspace.
With the situation developing inside the cockpit, passengers and crew members eventually gained access to the flight deck and helped restrain the co-pilot.
There were also other pilots travelling aboard the aircraft as passengers. They assisted in taking control of the plane and guiding it toward Tabuk.
The aircraft diverted to Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia following the incident.
Saudi authorities confirmed that the aircraft landed safely and that the pilots were taken to hospital after sustaining injuries.
The decision to divert to Tabuk was significant because the Dubai-Tel Aviv route normally passes through Saudi and Jordanian airspace.
After landing, the passengers remained at the Saudi airport for several hours before being flown to Israel on another flydubai aircraft.
More than 10 hours after the original incident, the passengers arrived at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, where relatives and friends waited for them.
Several passengers described their survival as a miracle.
One passenger, Lital Shachaf, said the experience was frightening and that she and others aboard the aircraft believed they might not survive.
Israeli officials have praised the passengers who entered the cockpit and helped stop the attacker.
One of those passengers was identified as Yaniv Hayun, who was reportedly among those who broke into the cockpit during the struggle.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later met passengers who had arrived at Ben Gurion Airport and praised their actions.
Another passenger, Asaf Rajuan, who also helped restrain the attacker, was photographed with a bloodied forehead following the struggle.
Rajuan said he acted to protect his daughter and family.
Netanyahu’s office also released footage of the prime minister meeting some of the passengers after they arrived in Israel.
The actions of the passengers became one of the most significant aspects of the incident because the aircraft was reportedly in a dangerous descent while the struggle was taking place inside the cockpit.
Who Was the Co-Pilot?
Israeli officials identified the co-pilot as an Omani national.
He was taken into custody after the aircraft landed in Saudi Arabia and is expected to be questioned by Saudi authorities.
However, authorities have not established a definitive motive for the attack.
This remains one of the major unanswered questions surrounding the incident.
Early reports from Israeli media contained conflicting information about the nationalities of the pilots and what exactly happened inside the cockpit.
Some initial reports described the incident as a hijacking attempt, while subsequent accounts from Israeli officials and other sources described it as an apparent attempt to take control of the aircraft and possibly crash it.
Prime Minister Netanyahu later said the incident did not necessarily fit the traditional definition of a hijacking and that investigators would need to establish exactly what happened.
Flydubai has also urged caution, saying that the underlying reasons for the incident remain unknown and warning against premature speculation.
The incident has prompted Israel to announce tighter security procedures for pilots operating flights into the country.
Doron Spielman, a spokesperson for Netanyahu, said Israel would seek to know the identities of pilots flying into the country and conduct additional security checks.
The move comes amid heightened security concerns in Israel following years of regional conflict.
The Dubai-Tel Aviv route is particularly significant because Israel and the United Arab Emirates established diplomatic relations under the Abraham Accords in 2020, leading to expanded travel, trade and security cooperation between the two countries.
Flydubai operates regular flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv, making the route an important connection between the UAE and Israel.
The incident has also led to changes in flydubai’s operations involving Israel while authorities investigate.
The airline has said it is cooperating with the relevant authorities and has maintained that speculation about the motive should be avoided until investigators establish the facts.
The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority described the event as a security incident that was brought under control.
The UAE government had not issued a detailed public explanation of the circumstances surrounding the cockpit confrontation at the time of the initial reports.
Investigation Continues
Investigators are now expected to establish how the confrontation began, why the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain and whether there was any deliberate plan to crash the aircraft.
Authorities will also examine how the incident developed inside the cockpit and how the aircraft was able to recover from its rapid descent.
Another important question is whether the co-pilot acted alone.
While some Israeli officials have raised security and terrorism concerns, the motive has not been conclusively established.
For that reason, the incident should not yet be described as a confirmed terrorist attack without further evidence from investigators.
What is clear, however, is that Flight FZ1073 experienced a serious security incident in the air, the captain was injured, the aircraft underwent a dramatic loss of altitude and passengers and crew members played a critical role in helping bring the situation under control.
The aircraft ultimately landed safely in Saudi Arabia, and all 174 people aboard were able to continue their journey.
The incident has since drawn international attention, with Israeli and Indian leaders praising Captain Smit Machchhar and the passengers who intervened during the emergency.
For the passengers aboard Flight FZ1073, what began as a routine flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a terrifying fight for control of the aircraft, one that ended with everyone aboard reaching the ground alive.
