The Federal Government has launched a nationwide revenue recovery initiative to improve inflows into the Federation Account and curb financial leakages across key revenue-generating agencies.
The initiative was unveiled on Monday, October 20, 2025, during a meeting at the headquarters of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) in Abuja. The session was chaired by RMAFC Chairman, Dr. Mohammed Shehu, who hosted the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji, for the official inauguration of consultants engaged to drive the recovery effort.
According to a statement by the RMAFC Head of Information and Public Relations, Maryam Yusuf, the exercise aims to promote fiscal transparency, strengthen accountability, and ensure that all statutory revenues due to the Federation are fully remitted.
The move comes amid an ongoing probe into an alleged under-remittance of $42.37 billion (about N12.91 trillion) to the Federation Account between 2011 and 2017, as reported by The PUNCH.
Dr. Shehu reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to strengthening fiscal governance, noting that the exercise was a “deliberate, results-driven initiative” designed to ensure that every recoverable naira is transparently accounted for.
He added that hiring consultants was a strategic measure to seal revenue leakages, improve transparency, and expand the fiscal capacity of all three tiers of government, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“In line with our constitutional mandate and with full support from Mr. President, his Special Adviser on Revenue, and the FIRS, this project seeks to identify and recover unremitted revenues across various sectors of the economy,” the statement read.
Representing the FIRS Chairman at the event, Coordinating Director Shettima Tamadi commended RMAFC’s leadership and pledged the Service’s continued collaboration in achieving the programme’s objectives.
“Nigeria faces a significant revenue gap, but with stronger inter-agency collaboration and accountability, we can bridge that gap and attain sustainable fiscal growth,” Tamadi said.
The Secretary to the Commission, Joseph Okechukwu, urged the consultants to complete their assignment within the stipulated six months and ensure prompt recovery of all identified funds for national development.
Speaking on behalf of the consultants, the lead consultant, Temitayo Ojeleke, described the engagement as a “national call to duty,” pledging professionalism, transparency, and tangible results.
“We see this as an opportunity to contribute to Nigeria’s economic renewal and will work to strengthen the nation’s revenue base,” he stated.
The inauguration represents a key milestone in RMAFC’s broader effort to deepen inter-agency collaboration, improve accountability, and maximise revenue for the collective growth of the Federation.
