The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the temporary closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu for urgent runway repairs. The airport will shut down from April 22 to May 6, 2025, following a significant rupture in a key section of the runway.
Airlines Adjust Flight Schedules to Minimize Disruptions
In response to the closure, United Nigeria Airlines will reroute all flights to and from Enugu to Chinua Achebe Airport in Anambra. The airline stated that this proactive move aims to minimize disruptions for passengers while ensuring continued safety and comfort.
Similarly, Air Peace has updated its flight schedules, confirming that all services originally intended for Enugu will now operate from Asaba Airport. Both airlines emphasized their commitment to smooth operations despite the unexpected changes.
FAAN Details Reason for Temporary Shutdown
FAAN explained that the temporary closure was necessary after discovering a significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway. The authority has scheduled emergency repairs from April 22 to May 6 to address the issue and ensure the long-term safety of the airport. During the repairs, the runway will remain closed for both landings and takeoffs.
In an official statement, FAAN assured passengers that the closure is in compliance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations and is a necessary step for the continued modernization of the airport’s facilities.
Passengers Urged to Explore Alternative Travel Routes
While the closure may disrupt travel plans, FAAN has apologized for the late notice and appealed for understanding from all affected passengers. Airlines, including Ibom Air, are reaching out to those already booked on affected flights and offering alternative options through major airports such as Lagos, Abuja, and Anambra.
Ibom Air further stated that passengers with affected bookings can inquire about rebooking options at the airline’s desks in Lagos, Abuja, or Enugu. Travelers are advised to stay in close contact with their airlines for the latest updates on flight adjustments and alternative travel arrangements during the repair period.
