The French crime musical Emilia Perez has made history at the 97th Academy Awards, widely known as the Oscars, by earning 13 nominations, the highest ever for a non-English language film.
The nominations for this year’s prestigious ceremony, which honors artistic and technical excellence in filmmaking, were announced on Thursday.
Following closely behind Emilia Pérez are The Brutalist and Wicked, with each film receiving 10 nominations.
British-Nigerian actress Cynthia Erivo has also captured attention with her nomination for Best Actress for her performance in Wicked. At 38, her recognition places her closer to achieving the esteemed EGOT status—an honor given to individuals who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
Erivo’s journey to the EGOT began in 2016 when she won a Tony Award for her role in The Color Purple. She later claimed a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album and an Emmy Award for her work in the same production. With her latest Oscar nod, Erivo continues to assert herself as a leading figure in the entertainment industry.
