What drives someone like Elon Musk to achieve extraordinary success? According to his former wife, author Justine Musk, the answer goes beyond ambition, intelligence, and long hours. One of the most important habits she noticed was his willingness to say no.

During a TEDx talk in 2014, Justine shared observations from her years with Musk, describing how he protected his time and energy by turning down demands that did not serve his priorities.

What Justine Musk Observed

Justine Musk, an author and mother of six of Elon Musk’s children, had a close view of his rise as he built companies that would later become globally recognized, including Tesla and SpaceX.

Looking back on their marriage, she identified two traits that stood out to her: he worked exceptionally hard, and he frequently said no.

She explained that Musk was willing to reject requests for his time, attention, and energy. Rather than allowing other people’s demands to dictate his schedule, he protected those resources and directed them toward the goals he considered important.

For Justine, that realization carried a broader message: every meaningful “no” can create room for a more important “yes.”

Why Saying No Matters

Justine’s point was not simply that successful people should refuse more requests. Instead, she viewed saying no as a way of protecting personal priorities.

Every person has limited time, energy, and attention. Constantly agreeing to other people’s demands can leave little room for personal ambitions.

She described the idea as having a “deeper yes” behind every no, a commitment to the dreams, goals, and values that matter most.

In her view, that deeper commitment is closely connected to a person’s right to dream and pursue something meaningful.

Learning to Set Boundaries

Justine also reflected on how people develop their ability to establish boundaries from an early age.

She observed this quality in her children, who were often comfortable saying no and expressing what they wanted. However, she said that she gradually lost some of that confidence as she grew older, particularly after receiving criticism for being “too much.”

She suggested that traits people are sometimes encouraged to suppress can eventually become important sources of strength.

For her, saying no was not about being difficult or controlling other people. It was about understanding where she stood and making her priorities clear.

Success Is Also About What You Reject

The lesson from Justine Musk’s observations goes beyond Elon Musk.

Success is often associated with working harder, taking opportunities, and constantly pushing forward. But knowing which opportunities to reject can be just as important.

Not every invitation deserves a response. Not every request deserves your time. And not every opportunity fits the direction you want your life or career to take.

That ability to distinguish between what matters and what does not can help protect the energy needed to pursue bigger goals.

Steve Jobs Had a Similar Philosophy

The same principle was famously associated with Steve Jobs.

When discussing focus in 1997, Jobs emphasized that focusing was not simply about deciding what to pursue. It also meant being willing to turn down many other possibilities.

The philosophy is straightforward: progress often requires eliminating distractions rather than continually adding more commitments.

A person who tries to pursue everything can easily lose sight of the one thing that matters most.

The Power of a Meaningful “No”

More than a decade after Justine Musk shared her observations, the lesson remains relevant.

Modern life is filled with demands competing for our attention, work, social commitments, messages, opportunities, and other people’s expectations.

Saying no can therefore be more than a rejection. It can be a deliberate decision to protect your time, energy, and ambitions.

The bigger lesson from Justine Musk’s reflections is simple: sometimes, moving closer to what you want requires having the courage to walk away from what does not serve it.
