A post by tech billionaire Elon Musk has generated widespread reactions among Nigerian social media users, after many misunderstood his use of the term “APC.”
Musk, who heads Tesla, shared a tweet on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday while describing the Cybertruck, stating that the vehicle is “an APC from the future.”

Although the tweet gained global attention, it drew a particularly strong response from Nigerians, where “APC” is commonly recognised as the acronym for the All Progressives Congress, the party that produced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
As reactions poured in, many users filled the comment section, wrongly assuming Musk was referring to the political party rather than the military term “Armoured Personnel Carrier,” which is often used to describe vehicles with heavy-duty, battle-ready designs like the Cybertruck.
Several responses revealed confusion and curiosity. One user, identified as Daily Pulse, asked Musk to clarify which “APC” he meant, reflecting the uncertainty among readers who interpreted the term politically.
Others urged caution, pointing out that the acronym carries strong political meaning in Nigeria. A user known as First Principles suggested Musk should avoid using “APC,” arguing that it is associated with difficult experiences for many Nigerians.
In a similar tone, another commenter, Dhamilarey, advised the tech billionaire to consider alternative wording, warning that the abbreviation could easily be misread and provoke unintended reactions.
Humorous takes also emerged. A user named Prom Prom joked about the momentary panic the phrase caused before its actual meaning became clear.
Another user, Aanuoluwapo Sukoto, shared a more balanced view, noting that while the phrase sounded striking in a Nigerian context, the Cybertruck itself appears futuristic and impressive.
Meanwhile, some commenters, including Parable, called on Musk to spell out the full term to avoid further confusion, while Tamunotonye remarked that the acronym has become sensitive due to Nigeria’s political climate.
Amid the debate, a number of users stepped in to clarify the intended meaning. They explained that “APC” refers to “Armoured Personnel Carrier,” a category of military vehicles known for strength and off-road capability.
One user, Dr Ose Etoobhio, pointed out that the term describes armoured vehicles similar to tanks, while internet personality Daniel Regha added that Musk was referencing the Cybertruck’s design and features, which resemble those of military-grade vehicles.
While some commenters tried to link the tweet to Nigeria’s political situation, others dismissed such interpretations, emphasising that the post was purely about vehicle design and innovation.
The episode underscores how global conversations on social media can be interpreted differently across regions, especially when certain terms carry strong political or emotional meaning in local contexts.
