In celebration of International Women’s Day 2025, the London Business School (LBS) Alumni Community Nigeria hosted a private brunch and fireside chat in Lagos. The exclusive event brought together top Nigerian business executives from banking, finance, FMCG, and tech. At the center of it all stood a respected trailblazer, Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, CEO of Fidelity Bank Plc.

This year’s Women’s Month theme, “Accelerate Action,” guided the conversations. But Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe’s words elevated the room beyond the expected. Her message struck a chord with every attendee: lead boldly, live purposefully.

“Barriers Motivate Me to Go Harder”

Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe shared the personal story behind her rise in a male-dominated industry. Her tone was confident and resolute.

“I have never acknowledged the gender glass ceiling,” she said. “When something looks like a barrier, I see it as motivation.”

That philosophy has shaped her leadership. It helped her break new ground as the first female CEO in Fidelity Bank’s history. She didn’t just climb the ranks, she transformed the culture.

Under her leadership, Fidelity Bank has embraced innovation and inclusivity. Her approach prioritizes results and people. She encourages bold thinking while staying grounded in values.

“Don’t fear failure,” she advised. “Every misstep taught me something. I’ve grown from each one.”

She reminded attendees that strong leadership requires courage, clear thinking, and relentless discipline. These traits helped her lead Fidelity Bank to new heights.

“We Must Push for More Women at the Top”

Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe highlighted Nigeria’s progress in banking leadership. Eleven of the country’s 26 commercial banks now have female CEOs. Yet, she urged the community to aim higher.

“That’s progress, but we must not stop there. We want to see that number rise, to 14, 15, and beyond.”

She also called for practical efforts in mentoring and promoting women across industries.

Beyond boardroom achievements, she spoke on life balance. For her, leadership includes managing both career and family without losing focus.

“Balancing work and home life isn’t just important for business, it’s vital for a successful life,” she said.

Her insight reminded guests that holistic leadership strengthens not just organizations but society as a whole.

The event also celebrated the LBS Alumni Community’s mission. Akintayo Sanwo-Olu, President of the Nigerian chapter, emphasized their goal of shaping leadership across sectors.

“We’re not just discussing change, we’re building it,” he said. “We’re empowering more women to lead and creating new narratives.”

Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe praised the alumni network’s quality and spirit. “It’s inspiring to see so many women leading with excellence,” she said.

A Living Example of Action

The event wasn’t just about recognition, it was a moment of reflection and challenge. Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe’s story showed what’s possible when women lead with vision and heart. She encouraged every leader in the room to take action, not tomorrow, but now.

In her, the LBS community found more than a speaker. They found a model of transformational leadership, and proof that real change begins when women lead with purpose.
