Top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Borno State have thrown their weight behind Vice President Kashim Shettima, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to retain him as running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

In a communique issued after a high-level meeting at the Borno Government House in Maiduguri on Sunday, the APC stalwarts praised Shettima’s loyalty and commitment to the Tinubu administration, describing him as a pillar of the “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

The call comes amid growing speculation of political pressure from some Northwest elements lobbying for Shettima’s replacement ahead of the next election cycle.

Strong Support for Shettima’s Loyalty and Performance

“The meeting prayed for Mr. President to retain His Excellency Senator Kashim Shettima as his Vice President for his second term,” the communique stated, highlighting his “diligent service” and dedication to the administration’s vision.

The gathering brought together key political figures from Borno, including APC Deputy National Chairman (North) Ali Dalori, sitting senators, and former ambassadors. The leaders pledged unwavering support for both President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima, emphasizing the need for continued unity within the party.

Backing Zulum and Reaffirming APC Loyalty

The leaders also expressed full confidence in Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, praising his efforts in restoring peace and driving development across the state.

“Governor Zulum remains a beacon of resilience in the fight against terrorism. We urge him to stay focused on his mission of liberating Borno from insecurity and underdevelopment,” the statement read.

Dismissing any potential realignment, the leaders reaffirmed Borno’s allegiance to the APC, rejecting speculation about mergers or shifts to other political platforms.

“Borno shall remain in APC. No merger or political switch,” the communique firmly stated.

Appeal for Federal Investment in Northeast Development

The stakeholders called on the federal government to continue investing in the Northeast, especially in oil exploration and transport infrastructure.

“The meeting appealed to Mr. President to continue the oil exploration in the Northeast region, especially at Kolmani and the shores of Lake Chad. In addition, we urge further investment in road infrastructure to ensure the region’s security and prosperity,” the communique read.

The document was jointly signed by Borno APC Chairman Bello Ayuba and State Secretary Mustapha Loskuri, reaffirming the state’s unified stance as preparations for the 2027 elections take shape.
