Two former students of Benin Technical College, Benin City, Christabel Chukwuonye and Omosigho Eguakun, have played pivotal roles in Nigeria’s unbeaten run at the ongoing ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Division 1 Qualifier in Tanzania.
Their impressive performances have helped the Junior Female Yellow Greens reach the final of the qualifying tournament, with Nigeria now one victory away from securing a ticket to the 2027 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Nepal and Bangladesh.
Omosigho was the standout performer in Nigeria’s final Group A match against hosts Tanzania on Tuesday, claiming the Player of the Match award after producing a composed half-century.
She scored 50 runs from 46 balls, hitting seven boundaries, to guide Nigeria to 133 for seven before the team’s bowlers restricted Tanzania to 76 for eight, sealing a convincing 57-run victory.
The win completed Nigeria’s perfect group-stage campaign, with the Junior Female Yellow Greens winning all three of their matches to finish top of Group A with six points.
Omosigho’s performance was complemented by another former student of Benin Technical College, Peace Usen, who scored a valuable 32 off 35 balls, including four boundaries.
The result propelled Nigeria into the semi-finals, where captain Christabel took centre stage with a devastating bowling performance against Rwanda on Thursday.
Christabel, an all-rounder, claimed four wickets for just six runs in 3.1 overs as Nigeria dismissed Rwanda for 65 runs.
Her outstanding spell earned her the Player of the Match award and set the platform for Nigeria’s emphatic nine-wicket victory.
Nigeria needed only 10.4 overs to reach 66 for one and seal their place in Saturday’s final, maintaining their unbeaten record in the competition.
Christabel’s performance further underlined why she was entrusted with the captaincy of Nigeria’s 14-player squad.
She brings considerable international experience to the side, having previously represented Nigeria at the U-19 World Cup and impressed at the 2026 Kwibuka Women’s T20I Tournament, where she claimed 17 wickets in nine matches.
The emergence of Christabel and Omosigho has also brought renewed attention to Benin Technical College’s contribution to the development of young sporting talents.
The two players are among four former students of the college in the Nigerian squad, alongside Peace Usen and Beauty Oguai.
Their performances in Tanzania have provided a major source of pride for the institution, as its former students continue to make their mark on the international cricket stage.
With Nigeria now through to the final, attention will shift to Saturday’s decisive encounter, where Christabel, Omosigho and their teammates will seek to crown their impressive campaign with victory and secure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2027 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Nepal and Bangladesh.
