Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has once again resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), signalling a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku, the PDP’s presidential candidate in 2023, announced his resignation in a letter that emerged on Wednesday and was confirmed by multiple close associates.
This development comes just weeks after he facilitated the creation of a new political alliance under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), teaming up with prominent opposition figures such as Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Insiders reveal that the coalition aims to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.
Although Atiku is yet to publicly disclose his next political steps, sources indicate that the alliance has commenced strategic planning to build a strong and united opposition. His third resignation from the PDP is expected to further destabilise the party, which has struggled to recover from its defeat in the 2023 elections.
