US President Donald Trump has ruled out launching new attacks on Iran before the United States midterm elections scheduled for November 3, 2026, saying Washington is holding what he described as productive discussions with Tehran.

Trump made the announcement in a post on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, October 8, following reports that his administration had been considering fresh military strikes against Iranian targets before the elections.

The president said the United States would maintain its blockade while diplomatic discussions continued, insisting that Iran had suffered significant economic and military setbacks.

“We are having productive discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Trump wrote, adding that the United States would not attack Iran before the midterm elections.

His announcement came amid heightened concerns over the possibility of renewed military action and its potential consequences for global energy markets.

Reports of Possible US Military Strikes

Trump’s statement followed reports by American media organisations that the White House had asked the Pentagon to prepare options for possible strikes against Iran.

The Atlantic reported that the administration was considering military options that could be used before the November elections, while The New York Times also reported on preparations for potential action.

The reports raised concerns about a possible escalation of the conflict, which began in February following US-Israeli strikes against Iran.

The latest announcement, however, does not amount to a permanent end to military hostilities. Washington’s position on the blockade remains unchanged, and the outcome of the discussions with Tehran is still uncertain.

The conflict has also placed pressure on global energy markets, with traders concerned that further fighting could disrupt oil supplies and shipping routes across the Middle East.

Oil Prices Remain Under Pressure

Crude oil prices climbed sharply on Thursday amid fears of renewed attacks and continued disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway for international energy shipments.

Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, rose to $105.88 per barrel before retreating to approximately $104.28, according to reports on the market movement.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a major concern because of its importance to global oil and gas transportation. Any prolonged disruption to shipping through the waterway could increase energy costs and place additional pressure on consumers and businesses.

Tensions involving Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement and Saudi Arabia have added to concerns about the security of energy infrastructure and shipping routes in the region.

Trump’s announcement helped ease some concerns about an immediate US attack, although uncertainty over the wider conflict continues to influence market sentiment.

Putin Offers to Help End Middle East War

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed Moscow’s willingness to help bring the conflict to an end following talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Turkmenistan.

Putin said Russia was prepared to do everything within its power to contribute to resolving the situation, according to Russian news agencies.

He also acknowledged Iran’s efforts to end the war, as both countries continued diplomatic engagement ahead of a regional summit.

Russia and Iran have strengthened their diplomatic and military ties in recent years, particularly since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

During the meeting, Pezeshkian said Iran remained interested in dialogue but accused Washington of repeatedly attacking the country during previous negotiations.

Iran’s president called for a final framework to end the war, while warning that an agreement would be difficult if the United States continued to pursue what he described as a unilateral approach.

The statements highlight the diplomatic challenges facing efforts to end the conflict, despite Trump’s latest announcement.

Iran War Becomes Issue Ahead of US Elections

The conflict has also become a significant issue in American domestic politics ahead of the November midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress for the remainder of Trump’s current presidential term.

Although Trump is not personally on the ballot, his Republican Party faces the possibility of losing its current control of Congress.

Rising petrol prices and concerns about the cost of living have added to voter dissatisfaction, while the administration’s handling of the Iran conflict has attracted criticism from political opponents.

Trump has defended his approach, arguing that preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon is a major US security objective. He also recently rejected criticism of his comments about the potential consequences of an Iranian attack on American cities, saying his remarks had been misinterpreted.

For now, Trump’s announcement has reduced expectations of a new US attack before November 3, but it remains unclear whether ongoing discussions with Iran will produce a lasting agreement.

The continued blockade, tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and unresolved disagreements between Washington and Tehran mean the situation remains uncertain.
