Manchester United teenage sensation JJ Gabriel has reportedly asked to leave the club and become a free agent, raising major questions about his future at Old Trafford.
The 15-year-old is widely regarded as one of England’s most promising young players. His growing reputation was strengthened last season when he became the youngest winner of Manchester United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award and was also recognised as the outstanding player in the Premier League Under-18 competition.
Gabriel has now submitted a letter of de-registration, formally asking United to release him from his current agreement. The move suggests the highly rated youngster believes his future may lie away from the club.

However, Manchester United are not currently prepared to approve his request. The club reportedly believes there is still an opportunity to resolve the situation and convince Gabriel to remain.
The teenager had been in line to be part of United’s squad for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion. Instead, he has made it clear that he would prefer to leave rather than represent the club again at any level.
His limited involvement during pre-season is believed to have contributed to his decision. Gabriel was given just eight minutes as a substitute in the centre-forward position during United’s friendly against Atletico Madrid.
Although he is primarily a left winger or attacking midfielder, Gabriel has continued to attract attention with his performances for the academy. He scored three times against Sabah in the UEFA Youth League last week, despite facing players several years older than him.
His technical ability, close control and eye for goal have made him one of the most talked-about prospects in the United academy, with some observers predicting that he has the potential to reach the highest level of the game.
A number of major European clubs have reportedly shown interest in Gabriel, including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Manchester City also had an opportunity to sign him last summer, but Gabriel opted to remain at United after receiving assurances about his development and pathway towards the first team.
He has trained with United’s senior squad on several occasions and has reportedly impressed coaches with his technical quality. His attitude and professionalism have also earned praise within the club.
Why Gabriel’s situation is significant for Manchester United
Gabriel’s decision represents a significant concern for United, particularly given the club’s long-standing reputation for developing academy players.
He joined Manchester United at the age of nine and has been viewed internally as a potential future first-team star. Last December, he became the youngest player to appear and score for United in the FA Youth Cup when he found the net at Old Trafford.
Across 34 youth-team appearances spanning last season and the early stages of the current campaign, Gabriel has registered 31 goals and six assists, despite frequently competing against older players.
The teenager has also met former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and current head coach Ruben Amorim, while his first-team training opportunities have highlighted the club’s high regard for his ability.
However, competition for places in his preferred position has increased. United signed 18-year-old Tynan Thompson from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer and are also reportedly close to completing a deal for 16-year-old Isaac Konde from Liverpool. Both players are capable of operating on the left wing, where Gabriel is most comfortable.
Gabriel’s limited first-team involvement during pre-season may have further fuelled concerns about his pathway. He was given only eight minutes against Atletico Madrid and was subsequently left out of the senior squad for United’s Champions League fixture against Sabah.
Instead, he featured for the youth side at Leigh Sports Village and responded with a hat-trick in a 5-0 victory.
Michael Carrick had reportedly planned to include Gabriel in the squad for Brighton’s Carabao Cup visit. That opportunity, however, appears to have been rejected by the youngster as he pushes for an exit from Manchester United.
