June is more than just the start of summer, it’s also Men’s Health Month, a timely reminder for men to prioritize their physical and mental well-being. Amid a sea of wellness fads and flashy health products, one of the most effective ways to safeguard your health is surprisingly simple: regular checkups and preventive screenings.

Start with an Annual Physical

A yearly visit to your primary care provider lays the foundation for preventive care. It’s the doctor’s chance to assess how your body is functioning, flag any irregularities, and recommend next steps. Importantly, it’s also a safe space to discuss mental health, an often overlooked aspect of men’s healthcare, and get referrals to specialists if needed.

Watch Your Blood Sugar

With over 34 million Americans battling type 2 diabetes, and risk increasing with age, it’s vital to keep tabs on blood sugar. A simple A1C test, recommended every three years, can detect early signs and help prevent long-term complications such as kidney damage, vision loss, and heart disease.

Don’t Overlook Colon Cancer

Colon cancer tends to fly under the radar, especially since many early cases present no symptoms. Those over 50 are at greater risk, though signs like persistent abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, or changes in bowel habits shouldn’t be ignored. Routine screenings can catch issues early, when treatment is most effective.

Know Your Prostate Health

Prostate cancer affects 1 in 7 men globally, and high testosterone levels can accelerate its development. Doctors advise beginning PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) testing around age 55, or earlier for those with a family history. A tailored screening plan, discussed with your healthcare provider, is key.

Monitor Your Cholesterol

Age naturally raises cholesterol levels, but unchecked, it can lead to life-threatening conditions like heart attacks or strokes. Around 70 million Americans live with high cholesterol. If you have a family history, talk to your doctor about lifestyle changes, medication options, or even convenient at-home tests to stay ahead.

Keep an Eye on Blood Pressure

Nicknamed the “silent killer,” hypertension often develops unnoticed. It contributes to serious problems like heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Annual blood pressure checks, or more frequent monitoring for Black men or those with obesity, can make a lifesaving difference. Many pharmacies offer free or low-cost machines to check your numbers between appointments.

Taking control of your health doesn’t require drastic changes, just consistent care and regular screening. This June, Men’s Health Month is your invitation to prioritize yourself and ensure a longer, healthier life.
