Jorge died on Friday, August 7, in Rosario, Argentina, after undergoing treatment for an illness. His death was reported by several media outlets, while Argentine club Newell’s Old Boys also confirmed the news.
He played an important role in Lionel Messi’s journey from a young footballer in Rosario to one of the biggest names in world football.
Jorge managed his son’s career for many years and was closely involved in some of the most important decisions in Messi’s footballing life. He accompanied Lionel during his move to Spain as a teenager, when the youngster joined Barcelona.
The elder Messi remained a key figure in his son’s professional and personal life as Lionel went on to win major honours with Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Miami and Argentina.
Jorge had reportedly been receiving medical treatment in recent months, although the exact nature of his illness was not publicly disclosed.
Tributes have since emerged from the football community, with Newell’s Old Boys and other football organisations expressing condolences to the Messi family.
Jorge’s death comes as a major personal loss for Lionel Messi, who has often spoken about the important role his family played in his development and career.
