Ahead of the July 20, 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Oyebanji has intensified pressure on members of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). Reports indicate that Oyebanji has threatened APC executives at the state, local government, and ward levels, as well as several political appointees.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier fixed July 20 and August 8, 2026, for the governorship polls in Ekiti and Osun States respectively. Following this announcement, Oyebanji has stepped up endorsements while allegedly targeting loyalists of Engr. Kayode Ojo, the current Pro-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

Oyebanji’s Viral Threats

In a trending video, Governor Oyebanji was captured warning APC officials against supporting opposition figures within the party. He said:

“I want to see the local government and ward chairmen that will open their doors to these people. If they are popular, they should join another party and contest.”

The Governor also vowed to monitor his appointees’ activities on social media. According to him, those who “keep quiet” while his administration faces criticism but still collect government salaries will face consequences.

Reactions Trail Governor’s Comments

The Governor’s remarks have sparked widespread outrage both within and outside Ekiti State. Critics argue that his threats undermine democratic values, freedom of speech, and citizen journalism.

Some questioned whether Oyebanji views Ekiti as his personal estate where public salaries are used to buy loyalty. Others noted that the Governor’s mandate comes from the people, who reserve the right to demand accountability.

Allegations of Poor Governance

Many APC members and residents accuse Oyebanji of poor performance despite increased federal allocations following the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Critics point to worsening infrastructure deficits in health, education, agriculture, water supply, and road networks.

Business owners also complain of excessive taxation under his leadership, further fueling discontent.

Cabinet Sackings and Resignations

The Governor had earlier sacked over 90 percent of his cabinet members on August 11, 2025, a move political observers linked to internal party tensions and fears of defection.

Additionally, more than ten political appointees, including Mr. Wale Alade-Oba, Mr. Iseal Adesokan, and Mr. Dada Abiodun John, resigned. While some cited personal reasons, others accused the administration of being exclusive, directionless, and oppressive.
