The National Education Research and Development Council (NERDC) provides specific nomenclature for subjects taught in Nigerian schools. For instance, in the area of technology, the approved terms are Computer Studies (CS) and Information Technology (IT). In some contexts, particularly in higher levels, Computer Science (CS) is also acceptable.

In practice, CS is commonly used for both Computer Studies and Computer Science, aligning well with NERDC’s categorization. Similarly, IS often refers to Information Systems or Information Science, disciplines concerned with how technology supports information management and organizational processes. Within this framework, there should be no ambiguity between CS and IS.

The challenge, however, arises in the domain of Religious Studies. Traditionally, the curriculum recognizes Christian Religious Studies (CRS) and Islamic Religious Studies (IRS). Yet, recent documentation has presented the pair as CRS and IS instead of the standard CRS and IRS. This inconsistency raises questions about whether “IS” was mistakenly substituted for “IRS,” or if it reflects an unintended typographical error.

For clarity and alignment with educational standards, it is advisable to maintain consistency:

CS – Computer Studies

CRS – Christian Religious Studies

IRS – Islamic Religious Studies

Any deviation risks creating confusion in teaching, learning, and official documentation. Therefore, sticking to these established abbreviations ensures uniformity and accuracy within the Nigerian educational framework.

Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies is a public commentator and Professor of Applied Linguistics at the Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Humanities, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.
