Bill to Jail Non-Voters Sparks Backlash

A proposed bill from the National Assembly has drawn widespread criticism from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), who labeled it “ridiculous” and “laughable.” The bill, which seeks to penalize eligible Nigerians who fail to vote, has sparked intense public debate.

If passed, the legislation will make voting mandatory in all national and state elections. Citizens who fail to cast their votes without a valid reason could be fined N100,000, jailed for six months, or both.

Bill Aims to Tackle Voter Apathy

Supporters of the bill argue that it will reduce voter apathy and increase civic participation. They believe that compulsory voting could lead to a stronger democratic process.

However, critics disagree. They say forcing citizens to vote under threat of punishment contradicts the principles of a free and fair democracy.

Students Slam Lawmakers’ Priorities

In a strongly worded statement issued in Abeokuta, NANS Vice President for Inter-Campus and Gender Affairs, Akinbodunse Sileola Felicia, said the proposal is a clear case of misplaced priorities.

“Voting is a right, not an obligation enforced by fear,” she stated. “You cannot force people to participate in a system they no longer trust. Nigerians have the right to abstain, especially when they believe their votes do not count.”

She emphasized that the National Assembly should focus on fixing Nigeria’s flawed electoral system, not punishing citizens who are already disillusioned.

Electoral Reforms, Not Punitive Laws, Needed

According to NANS, electoral fraud, vote-buying, and rigging continue to undermine public trust. Akinbodunse noted that until these issues are addressed, mandatory voting will only deepen frustration.

“Instead of tightening loopholes and enhancing transparency, lawmakers are proposing laws that infringe on civil liberties,” she said. “It’s a dangerous path that must be stopped.”

Students Plan Nationwide Protest

NANS has pledged to resist the bill. The group announced plans to mobilize students across Nigeria in protest if the legislation is not withdrawn.

“This bill is nothing short of an insult,” Akinbodunse declared. “We will not sit back while the rights of Nigerians are trampled. If necessary, we will take to the streets.”

She also called on civil society organizations, labour unions, and human rights groups to unite in opposition.

Public Outcry Grows

Across social media and public forums, Nigerians are expressing outrage. Many view the bill as an attempt to divert attention from the country’s real problems.

As the debate intensifies, the National Assembly is under growing pressure to withdraw the proposal and redirect its energy toward meaningful reform.

For now, the battle lines are drawn. Students, activists, and concerned citizens are ready to fight what they see as an attack on personal freedom.
