Condemnation of DSS Invasion
Ayoola Lawal Odunewu, the immediate past Secretary of the Committee of APC Diaspora Chairmen and former Chairman of the APC in the Scandinavia countries, has condemned the recent invasion of the Lagos State Assembly by DSS operatives. He described the act as reckless and unacceptable, emphasizing that it goes against the rule of law and should not be ignored.
Concerns Over Political Instability
Speaking as a concerned Lagosian, Lawal-Odunewu expressed deep concern over the escalating crisis following the controversial ousting of Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa. While acknowledging Obasa’s right to legally challenge his removal, he urged all parties to handle disagreements with dignity, rather than resorting to undignified measures in what should remain an internal party affair.
Call for Respect and Due Process
“While ousted Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has the right to challenge his alleged backdoor removal through legal means, it is unfortunate that the situation has escalated this far. The matter should have been handled with dignity for the integrity of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Anything less is unacceptable.
“As both a party leader and a speaker who has contributed significantly to the party in Lagos, he deserves some level of respect and due process if the majority decide he can no longer lead them.”
Warning on Economic Consequences
Beyond the political turmoil, Lawal warned against the potential economic fallout from a collapse in order in Lagos, Nigeria’s business nerve center. He stressed that political stability, transparency, and strong institutions are critical to maintaining investor confidence. Any indication of a breakdown in the rule of law, he cautioned, would drive investors away, weakening Lagos’ economic capital and impacting the broader African business landscape.
Appeal for Immediate Intervention
Lawal called on President Bola Tinubu, party authorities, and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to take swift action to restore order and prevent further disruptions.
“Lagos must not collapse into chaos. Firm and decisive action by the authorities will save our city’s image and ensure its stability,” he added.
