2027 Presidency: APC Warns Nigerians Against Atiku

2027 Presidency: APC Warns Nigerians Against Atiku The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned Nigerians against supporting former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential election, alleging that his political history raises serious concerns about corruption and accountability. The ruling party made the remarks in a statement posted on its verified X account on Thursday, where it accused Atiku of being linked to a number of alleged local and international financial scandals. According to the APC, Atiku's political record is associated with some of the corruption controversies that, in its view, contributed to economic difficulties and weakened public confidence in government. The party said the 2027 election would provide Nigerians with another opportunity to reject what it described as Atiku's continued ambition to become president and prevent what it characterised as the possible misuse of public resources. The APC also highlighted the controversy surrounding the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project, citing proceedings before an International Chamber of Commerce arbitration tribunal in Paris. The party alleged that the tribunal examined a $500,000 payment reportedly made in January 2003 by Leno Adesanya, the promoter of Sunrise Power, to Jennifer Douglas, who was Atiku's wife at the time, through an offshore company. The APC also referred to other controversies, including the Siemens bribery case, the William Jefferson case, questions surrounding Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) funds and a US Senate investigation into suspicious financial transactions. The party maintained that the issues it raised were not merely allegations, arguing that they had been addressed in official records, tribunal proceedings, government investigations, legislative reports and international financial inquiries. “Together, they raise legitimate questions about the fitness for probity and accountability of this serial presidential contender,” the APC said. The party concluded by urging Nigerians to scrutinise Atiku's record and consider the allegations surrounding his past before making their choices in the 2027 presidential election.
