Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies Honored by NANS for Advancing Peace in Nigeria

In a significant gesture of recognition, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has honored Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies for her outstanding contributions to peace and stability in Nigeria. The event, held on the 18th of February 2025 at the School of Postgraduate Studies Hall, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) in Port Harcourt, saw the distinguished professor and Country President of the United Nations Positive Livelihood Award Centre (UN-POLAC) receive a prestigious Certificate of Credence.

During the ceremony, NANS representatives lauded Adesanya-Davies, a lecturer in the Department of English and Literary Studies with over three decades of experience, referring to her as “our own mother.” The students praised her commitment to fostering peace and national stability through her academic and humanitarian work.

The event also recognized the leadership of IAUE’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, with a vote of confidence and a Certificate of Credence. According to NANS, this acknowledgment was in appreciation of his dedication to academic excellence and student welfare.

“We commend your remarkable contributions to the education sector and the positive impact your leadership has had on students and staff alike,” NANS representatives stated during the presentation.

While celebrating Onuchuku’s leadership, the students also used the occasion to appeal to the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, urging him to confirm the Acting Vice Chancellor’s position as substantive Vice Chancellor due to his exemplary service and commendable performance.

Responding to the appeal, Dr. Ngozi Okiridu, the university’s Public Relations Officer, assured the students that their message would be conveyed to the Governor for due consideration.

Appreciation and Acknowledgment

Professor Chibuzor Nwobueze, Sub-Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, received the award on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, describing Onuchuku as “the most humane Vice Chancellor in Nigeria.” The event was attended by NANS Secretariat members, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, IAUE Senate representatives, student delegates, and other university officials.

The recognition of both Prof. Adesanya-Davies and Prof. Onuchuku underscores the commitment of IAUE to academic excellence and national development, further strengthening its reputation as a hub for transformative education and leadership.
